Writing your CV - 7 Top Tips

  1. Look carefully at the requirements of the job and what you think it entails AND who they may be looking for.
  2. Read the Person Specification carefully and think how this matches with your strengths and qualities.
  3. Do some background reading on the organisation. Find their web site or get company reports.
  4. Do your research. What skills, knowledge, qualities are they looking for? Make sure you sell your own qualities which match what they want. Don't dwell on what you can't do, or your experiences that are not relevant.
  5. Be objective and clear about your role as an individual AND your contribution as a team member.
  6. Presentation does usually matter so check spelling and layout.
  7. Have you answered the questions and given the information that is required Complete the C.V as asked for. Always customise a C.V. for the job in question.

At the Interview - Making the Right Impression

  1. Do not apologise for career gaps but be prepared to explain them in a positive light.
  2. Mention extra activities if relevant.
  3. Demonstrate reflectiveness - talk about the value of learning from experience and don't hide failures or problems, but show how you have learnt from the experience.
  4. Listen carefully to the questions before answering - and ask questions yourself (perhaps take a few questions with you to ask).
  5. Demonstrate some knowledge of the organisation or the sector in your answers - show that you have read up or are interested in current developments that affect the organisation.

Use positive body language

Stand tall and upright. Have a firm (but not too firm) handshake and make eye contact.
