Director makes cinema history
For the first time in history, a woman has won the prestigious Best Director category at the Oscars.
Kathryn Bigelow (left) won the award at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles for her film The Hurt Locker.
The film portrayed a team of bomb disposal experts in Iraq. Although it played to great critical acclaim, it was not a box office hit.
She was presented the award by Barbra Streisand, who said 'It's about time' before making the announcement.
Bigelow's success is being tipped as the beginning of a new wave of female film makers. Amy Mole, of the UK's Bird's Eye View film festival, which showcases female movie-making talent, said: "Bigelow's win feels like a momentous occasion - by putting the spotlight on fab directors like her and making her a role model, I hope women and girls can see the role of a film director as something more attainable."

Make party politics count for women
The Government may not yet have named the day for this year's General Election but that hasn't stopped parties across the political spectrum getting underway with their campaigning. Now the Fawcett Society, which works for equality between men and women at work, in the home and in public life, is calling for politicians to ensure women's rights are at the heart of their policies.
There is also a campaign to engage Black and Minority Ethnic women voters. For more information, link to the SWYOL pages Black and Minority Ethnic Women online. To register to vote, click here.
