Trust welcomes new Chair

head and shoulders shot of Helen Jackson South Yorkshire Women's Development Trust has a new Chair of Trustees, Helen Jackson. Helen is best known for her role as MP for Hillsborough in Sheffield before she stood down in 2005.

She is now on the Women's National Committee which was set up 40 years ago by Harold Wilson to help represent women's interests.

Helen said: " I am very proud and honoured to take over the Chair.

"South Yorkshire Women's Development Trust offers the chance for women across South Yorkshire to make their voices heard at a time when there is still so much to do to ensure that women have an equal role ."

Helen takes over from Jane Thomas who served as Chair for four years.

The trust also appointed three new trustees: Liz Rick, Kate Dommett and Sue Johns.

In My Shoes 6th - 12th July

woman holding a pair of shoesFollowing in the footsteps of the WalkTalk event last year when the 7/7 bombings survivor Gill Hicks came to Sheffield, the city is launching the In My Shoes celebration. In My Shoes aims to celebrate diversity by collecting people's stories.

The event was inspired by Gill, who lost both legs in the bombings and who now campaigns to promote better understanding between communities.

"The more we understand each other, the harder it is to be intolerant and the easier it is to work together on the things we all care about" Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Chair of Sheffield First Partnership, launching the event.

Go along to the event at the Peace Gardens in Sheffield 8th July 5.30 - 7pm to hear stories and be entertained. For more information, click here

'Gran-carers' face poverty - new report

grandma and grandchildThe campaign group Grandparents Plus says a new generation of grandparents are being caught in the middle of the generations - facing caring for their grandchildren as well as their own parents. A new report entitled The Poor Relation? says that one in three grandparents under 55 find it difficult to cope financially - and that they may be squeezed even more by having to cut their working hours to take care of young grandchildren.

"This report challenges the cosy image we have of the retired grandparent with time to spare," says Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of Grandparents Plus. For more details and to read the report contact Grandparents Plus
